14,000 nursing professionals have made UPMC their employer of choice—now it’s your turn to discover why! We’ll be sharing the stories of five UPMC nurses and why they chose to be part of UPMC’s mission to provide Life Changing Medicine to Pittsburgh and beyond.

“To do what nobody else will do, in a way that nobody else can, in spite of all we go through; is to be a nurse.” Rawsi Williams

Hi, my name is Nolan Chismire, and I’m a professional staff nurse in the emergency room at UPMC Presbyterian.

When I was in high school, I knew that after graduation I wanted to do something to help people. A career that stuck out to me as I was considering my future was nursing. I wrote a paper in 10th grade all about nursing, and then I just went from there! I enrolled in nursing school, and a few years later, here I am — an emergency room nurse at UPMC Presbyterian! I knew that I would be able to make a difference as a nurse, and now that I am one, I can see that I do just that.

The day-to-day here in the ER is very busy. In the ER, it comes in waves; we’ll have quieter moments, and then moments when a really tough case comes in and it’s all hands on deck. I see a little bit of everything here. Being an ER nurse makes you a jack-of-all-trades and is preparing me well for what’s next in my nursing career.

“Being an ER nurse is preparing me well for what’s next in my nursing career…It feels good to know that you helped someone that was in really bad shape improve so much.”

In the ER, it’s exciting to know you can make a difference. It feels good to know that you helped someone who was in really bad shape improve so much. Once, I saw a patient who came in with symptoms of a stroke and was stabilized and released within hours. I’ve also seen a trauma patient who had tests completed within minutes of arriving that ended up saving his life. It’s pretty amazing to see and be a part of that!

As I look to the future, I hope to go back to school to get my bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and go on to perhaps be a flight nurse. It’s great to know that UPMC will be there to support both my goals and my family’s goals. With UPMC’s tuition assistance benefit, my wife is now considering nursing school for her future, as well.

When I was in nursing school, I knew that UPMC provided the best care in the area. Now that I’m an employee, I can see that it provides the best career opportunities in the area, as well. A nursing career at UPMC turned out to be a great choice for me. I bet it would be for you, too!
