UPMC is committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment for everyone who enters its facilities, and a key part of that commitment is hiring dedicated safety and security professionals. These teams work around the clock to protect patients, visitors, and employees by maintaining secure campuses, responding quickly to emerging situations, and supporting a culture of awareness and preparedness.

Whether they’re providing directions to a lost visitor, scanning cameras for emergency circumstances, or de-escalating situations of distress, our security staff and police officers are committed to keeping employees, patients, and visitors safe every single day.

Todd B.

Todd B. spends his days helping the community and his colleagues feel at ease and equipped to navigate their experience at UPMC Western Maryland.

“We do a variety of different things here,” according to Todd. “I do anything that has to do with safety and I love it. But the biggest thing is being here for the employees and patients.”

Todd is known by staff and patients for his infectious, positive attitude and friendly demeanor no matter what a situation may bring through the door. His calmness and eagerness to help make the lives of patients, visitors, and staff as easy and seamless as possible makes him and his mission an asset to the UPMC safety and security department.

Jessica L.

Jessica L. started her journey with UPMC as a security officer, stepping into health care during a time of great change. She showed up every day with compassion and dedication, helping patients and families feel safe and supported.

The following year, she took her career to the next level by earning her International Association of Hospital Security and Safety (IAHSS) certification in healthcare security and safety. Then came an incredible opportunity: UPMC sponsored her through the Act 120 Police Academy. After months of intense physical and mental training, Jessica graduated from Mercyhurst Police Academy in December 2024. Today, she proudly serves as a Sr. Police Officer at UPMC Northwest.

Whether she’s celebrating new life with families or offering comfort during difficult moments, Jessica brings heart and strength to every shift. “UPMC takes pride in all their facilities and cares about their employees — not just in police and security, but across the board,” Jessica shares.

Roger I.

Roger I.‘s career began thirty years ago as he worked in various police departments in western Pennsylvania, each step adding to his wealth of experience. After years of service, Roger retired a few years ago… that was, until he decided he missed the sense of duty that came with being a police officer. Flash forward to today at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, where Roger is now an esteemed member of the team.

“They say the best job is one that does not feel like a job,” Roger said. “I enjoy coming to work and enjoy my workers and the patients and visitors here. I have and will continue to tell other officers who are ready to retire to apply for a job here.”

Roger’s passion for community service doesn’t stop there. He has established a Facebook group called “Bringing Police and Kids Together” to help children feel more comfortable around police officers. Through this initiative, he has collected and distributed stuffed animals to kids and patients at UPMC Magee, bringing smiles and comfort to so many. As a result of his work, Roger has been honored with the Sunshine Award and the Award for Commitment to Excellence in Services (ACES).

By fostering a safe and welcoming environment, Roger helps UPMC achieve its mission of providing outstanding patient care and improving the health and well-being of every patient and community.
