The application process, interviewing, culture and values, and career development: these are just a few topics we are asked about the most here at UPMC Careers. Read on to get the inside scoop on your questions and curiosities directly from real UPMC recruiters!

Q: Do you hire on the spot at interviews?

A: We don’t typically hire on the spot, but sometimes we have interview events where we’ll make an offer to a candidate we’re really excited about. But typically, you’ll hear back from a recruiter within the week of your interview.

Q: Do you offer any assistance for employees who are/will be in school?

A: Tuition assistance is something many employees take advantage of. UPMC employees can receive reimbursement for eligible out-of-pocket tuition costs when attending any college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Full-time and flexible full-time staff are eligible to receive 100% reimbursement up to $6,000 and regular part-time and job-share staff will be eligible for $3,000. Whether you’re full-time, part-time, or still in school, there is assistance available to you!

Q: How do I stand out in an interview?

A: Make sure you’re calm, prepared, and genuine. Making a job change is a big deal, and it’s important for candidates to be real and ask questions that will help them get to the next step of their career, not just the role you’re interviewing for. Using real life stories and situational examples from work, school, or internships helps you stand out and allows the hiring manager to envision what it would be like to work with you in the future!

Q: Does UPMC promote career growth?

A: UPMC promotes career growth in a number of ways. We see career development as both promotions and transfers throughout out system. One of the best ways is through the career ladders UPMC offers which outline how to get to the next step of your career. Temporary employment is a great way to get your foot in the door and see if you like the work; many of these folks end up moving on to permanent employees. Finally, you can take advantage of tuition assistance and other training related to career development.

At any point in time were those to change, you can go into the system you applied through and update that information! Our application process can be lengthy, so make sure you have about 30 minutes to fill out all the questions on an application form. Be sure to have a professional resume ready to upload to your application, and make sure your employment information is as accurate as it can be.
