Have you ever considered what it takes for a hospital run properly? You may think of doctors, nurses, therapists, and other health care workers inside the hospital walls – but what about the building itself?

UPMC’s hospital facilities require complex and detailed maintenance to ensure that they consistently and safely provide a space for patients to receive care, which is why UPMC is committed to training up outstanding maintenance professionals through the Facilities & Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.

Launched in 2024, this paid four-year apprenticeship program offers a pathway to the skilled trades through hands-on training, mentorship, and the opportunity to develop essential skills. Apprentices work full-time while receiving on-the-job training and participating in online learning towards a certificate program.

One of UPMC’s current apprentices, Kira K., shed some light on her experience so far in the program and her journey to a career in facilities and maintenance.

“The maintenance department and staff here are very welcoming, supportive, and always giving in-depth explanations to expand my technical skills. If anyone is interested in this program but feels like they may not be a good fit, don’t let your doubts overwhelm you. ”

“Growing up, I was always fascinated with mechanical equipment, how things work, and why they work. When I was in high school, I started attending a vocational school for electrical systems. By the end of high school, I had grown a solid understanding and wanted to advance my education further. I was so grateful to have an opportunity to pursue this apprenticeship program not only to improve my existing skills, but also to expand my knowledge to other fields including HVAC, plumbing, and refrigeration.

I’ve had a fantastic experience in the Facilities & Maintenance Apprenticeship Program. When I first started the program, I had minimal experience working with industrial equipment. I’ll admit that I was a little intimidated, but those negative feelings didn’t last long! The Maintenance department and staff here are very welcoming, supportive, and always giving in-depth explanations to expand my technical skills. If anyone is interested in this program but feels like they may not be a good fit, don’t let your doubts overwhelm you.  Even if you’re new to the field and have little to no experience, there’s no need to worry. In this program, you’ll receive both on-the-job training and schooling.

I find it very rewarding to be able to use my skills to assist in the troubleshooting process of various equipment in the hospital. At the end of the day, I’m grateful to say that my job leaves me with satisfaction and a purpose.

Outside of work, I spend a lot of my time going to the gym and running. Since 2022, I have run five half marathons, and this year I ran my first full marathon. When I am not training for upcoming races, I spend my weekends going out with friends and family.”
